The Facts

Dennis Herrera will retire in December, ending his run as SFPUC general manager, according to the Standard. The SFPUC runs San Francisco's drinking water, wastewater, and power systems.

The Context

Herrera took the helm after former general manager Harlan Kelly was sentenced to four years in prison for bribery, bank fraud, and conspiracy. Before the SFPUC, Herrera served nearly 20 years as city attorney, first elected in 2001.

The GrowSF Take

Mayor Lurie now gets one of the most important appointments in city government. The next SFPUC chief should focus on basics: honest contracting, reliable water and power, and faster delivery of major infrastructure. They'll also get to weigh in on, or oversee the implementation of, taking over PG&E power infrastructure in the City.
